At 8:15 a.m., our local guide will pick up passengers from their hotels in Copacabana and transfer them to the port on Lake Titicaca. At 8:30 a.m., we will depart by boat for Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun), a journey of approximately two hours. Upon arrival at Challapampa, the local community will give us a warm welcome. Here, we will enjoy the tranquility of its white sand beach and multicolored pebbles. Our guide will explain the community's organization, and then we will take an hour-long hike to reach the archaeological sites of Chinkana, also known as the Labyrinth, and the Sacred Rock, a mythical place linked to the origin of the Sun and the founding of the Inca Empire by Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo.
Afterwards, we will enjoy an Andean afternoon snack (Apthapi), prepared with local products, and have the opportunity to share in the daily activities of the locals. The return trip to Copacabana will begin at 1:30 p.m., with an expected arrival time of 4:00 p.m., at which time passengers will be transferred to their hotels.
As for the Island of the Sun, it stretches 9.6 km long by 4.8 km wide and is considered a sacred place, as tradition holds that it was where the god Viracocha created humanity after the flood. The island is divided into three communities: Yumani, in the south; Challa, on the central east coast; and Challapampa, in the north, which is the gateway to the Andean origins.
The southern part of the island is the most visited and is home to important archaeological ruins, such as the Pilkokaina Temple and the Inca stone steps leading to the Fountain of Life. This area also offers accommodations, restaurants, and cafes. The northern part can be reached by boat from Yumani or on foot via a three-hour pre-Columbian trail. There you will find the Chinkana, the Temple of the Sun, the Sacred Rock, and the Ceremonial Table, as well as an interpretive trail and an archaeological museum.
